518-Lampascione 2 - Leopoldia comosa 2'23 Wp
Leopoldia comosa (syn. Muscari comosum) is a perennial bulbous flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to the Mediterranean region. The species produces a distinctive raceme, with urn‑shaped fertile flowers in brownish‑green tones at the base and a tuft of sterile violet‑blue flowers above, giving the inflorescence its striking and ornamental appearance in spring landscapes.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Leopoldia comosa has a long tradition of use: its bulbs are consumed as food in several Mediterranean countries and have been studied in ethnobotanical and phytochemical research for their diverse biological properties.
The painting presents the species with botanical precision, emphasising both the contrasting colours of fertile and sterile flowers and the overall form of the inflorescence, capturing its morphological identity as well as its visual allure.
This work won the 1st Prize at the Cherasco Natural History Calendar Competition 2024 and was subsequently exhibited in the finalists’ group exhibition for the same competition. It was later included in the travelling exhibition Botanical Art Worldwide 2025 (BAW 2025), shown at MUSE – Museum of Nature and Science, Castel Belasi (TN) and at the Museo della Grafica in Pisa, reaching a wide and international audience of botanical art enthusiasts and professionals.
